How to Teach Kids to be Anti-Racist

Email share

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite." - Nelson Mandela

The horrific events that took the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, as well as many others, are not isolated to this year—these killings personify systemic failures in our society and have deeply affected us and our communities. The calls for racial justice and equity have sparked a global discussion, acknowledging how much work needs to be done, and we’re again left wondering how we can have the necessary and honest conversations with our children about racism in America.

These critical topics can be difficult to address with our youngest learners, but we are here to help you teach this new generation. These resources from PBS and PBS KIDS are intended to be used in discussion with children, but they are also valuable tools for anyone who is committed to learning more about how to be anti-racist.
