NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR ROY COOPER DECLARES ACES AWARENESS WEEK
Resilience Documentary Premieres Statewide Tuesday, November 19, at 8 PM, on UNC-TV
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, 11/19/19 — North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper issued a proclamation declaring November 17-24, 2019, as ACEs Awareness Week throughout the state. The proclamation comes ahead of the statewide broadcast of the ACEs documentary Resilience, Tuesday, November 19, at 8 PM, on UNC-TV.
The proclamation defines ACEs, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, as “potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood, such as experiencing violence, abuse, or neglect which have a tremendous impact on future violence victimization and perpetration as well as lifelong health.”
The documentary Resilience, a project of James Redford and Karen Pritzker, delves deep into the science behind ACEs and the havoc that the syndrome can wreak on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, depression, substance abuse and other lifelong effects on health and behavior. The film also examines how the toxic stress produced by ACEs also creates long-term impact on our communities.
Following the broadcast, viewers are encouraged to participate in a Twitter Town Hall featuring local and national experts in childhood trauma, toxic stress, trauma prevention and resilience building. Participants include Resilience documentary director Redford, Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina President & CEO Sharon Hirsch, Prevent Child Abuse America CEO Melissa Merrick, MD and many more.
In addition to the Resilience broadcast on UNC-TV, several other ACEs Awareness Week screenings and discussions are taking place throughout the state.
