PBS North Carolina Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Join us September 15 – October 15 as we honor the culture and heritage of Hispanic and Latino Americans, celebrating their contributions and influence. Premieres include a biography of the legendary Rita Moreno, new documentaries, highlights of favorite soprano arias and a cultural and culinary tour of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Raúl Juliá: The World's a Stage | American Masters

Explore a warm and revealing portrait of the charismatic, groundbreaking actor’s journey from his native Puerto Rico to the creative hotbed of 1960s New York City, to prominence on Broadway and in Hollywood. Filled with passion, determination and joy, Juliá’s brilliant and daring career was tragically cut short by his untimely death 27 years ago, at age 54.

Gloria Estefan: Sangre Yoruba | Great Performances

Gloria Estefan narrates and hosts her journey through three of Brazil’s most influential cities, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Salvador, discussing the history of Samba and its many variations. Featuring regional celebrities like Maria Rita, Carlinhos Brown and Jorge Arãgo, the documentary looks at the African origins of Brazilian music and specific sites that have inspired artists.

Alma's Way Premieres Monday, October 5 on Rootle

The engaging modern-day series stars 6-year-old Alma Rivera, a proud, confident Puerto Rican girl, who lives in the Bronx with her parents and younger brother, Junior, as well as a diverse group of close-knit and loving friends, family and community members.

Alma's Way gives children ages 4-6 the power to find their own answers to their problems, express what they think and feel, and recognize and respect the unique perspective of others.
 

Fruits of Labor | POV

Ashley, a Mexican-American teenager living in an agricultural town in the central coast of California, dreams of graduating high school and going to college. But when ICE raids threaten her family, Ashley is forced to become the breadwinner, working days in the strawberry fields and nights at a food processing company.

This year’s annual Hispanic Heritage Awards will once again shine a spotlight on the extraordinary accomplishments of the Latino community and the lasting contributions made to our country.

Three Divas at Versailles | Great Performances at the Met

Three-time Grammy winner Isabel Leonard joins Nadine Sierra and Ailyn Pérez to perform timeless selections by Mozart, Offenbach and Bizet including “Voi che sapete” and “Belle nuit, ô nuit d’amour” along with beloved songs like “Bésame Mucho” and “Cielito Lindo.” The concert was recorded in May at the Royal Opera of Versailles in France and Met Opera soprano Christine Goerke hosts.

La Frontera with Pati Jinich

Acclaimed chef and James Beard Award-winning host Pati Jinich, travels the US-Mexico border. In Part Two of the series, premiering October 22, Pati travels from Laredo and Nuevo Laredo to Brownsville, Texas. She learns how tight-knit family bonds are an underlying theme connecting everything in the Laredos, and throughout La Frontera.

Letters to Eloisa | Voces

Based on correspondence with his sister in exile, Letters to Eloisa recounts the life of Cuban literary great José Lezama Lima, author of a homoerotic novel, "Paradiso," and tells the story of his silencing by the Cuban revolutionary government.

Letters to Eloisa premieres Friday, October 15, 10 PM on PBS NC and the PBS Video app.
