Aurora community mourns the loss of Overland HS principal Aleshia Armour

AURORA, Colo. — Cherry Creek Schools announced Monday, March 1 that Overland High School Principal Aleshia Armour died over the weekend due to natural causes.

The Sentinel was first to report the news of Armour’s passing. The principal was 42 years old.

Overland High School and Prairie Middle School canceled classes March 1.

“This is a devastating loss for the Cherry Creek Schools and Overland communities, and I encourage you to have a conversation with your student this evening,” Cherry Creek Schools Superintendent Scott Siegfried wrote in a letter to parents.

Siegfried added that crisis teams will be available all week to help students struggling with this news. Students can reach virtual support by calling 720-219-3998 or emailing snederveld@cherrycreekschools.org.

A message on the Cherry Creek Schools website reads, “Aleshia leaves behind a legacy of fearless leadership, empathy and a deep commitment to equity and excellence. Her dedication to the community came through in everything she did – in her work at Overland, schools across the district, and in her interactions and relationships with students, parents, teachers and fellow administrators.”

U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, D-Aurora, wrote on Facebook that “Aleshia left an indelible mark on the entire Overland community. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the lives that she touched.”

Colorado State Rep. Iman Jodeh, an Overland HS alum, also posted a remembrance of Armour to Facebook, saying the principal was “present, responsive, loving, caring, and it culminated in being an amazing friend, educator, wife, and mother.” 

“You will be missed my dear friend,” Jodeh continued, “rest in power.”
