GLOSSARY

STEM — STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. It represents an interdisciplinary and integrated approach to gathering hands-on experience and applying “real-world” knowledge. People who work in STEM fields use knowledge in science, engineering, technology, or math to understand the world around us and to solve problems.

Groundwater — Water that is stored underground in soil and rock layers. 

Hydrologist — A scientist who studies water—where it comes from, how it moves, and how we use it. 

Aquifer — An underground layer of rock or soil that holds groundwater. 

Watershed — An area of land where all the water drains into the same river, lake, or stream. 

Reservoir — A lake where water is stored for drinking, farming, or electricity. 

Snowmelt — Snow that melts into water as temperatures warm in spring. 

Surface Water — Water found on the Earth’s surface, such as rivers, lakes, and streams. 

Recharge — The process of refilling groundwater supplies. 

Passive Recharge — Letting groundwater refill naturally by resting wells and not pumping water. 

Active Recharge — Adding water directly into the ground or wells to refill groundwater faster.
