
Orange County spends millions to house homeless people in jail. Is there a better way?

Florida's Department of Governmental Efficiency Task Force has sent letters to several counties and municipalities notifying them of impending audits, including Orange County. The state's CFO Blaise Ingoglia says rising property values have pushed tax bills higher — and that local government budgets have far exceeded inflation or population needs.
The city is in contract negotiations now with Gomez Construction to design and build the memorial, based on a conceptual design from the Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee. The city is also purchasing the property immediately behind the Pulse site, which will also be used for the memorial.
The county has faced pressure to make changes to the boundary, as well as its Vision 2050 growth plan and an ordinance on development in the Lake Pickett area.
Florida’s latest school grades are out, with 28 districts earning A ratings, including many in Central Florida. And according to its own metrics, the state says the number of A-rated schools is up 6 percent.
