“In dulci jubilo” is one of the oldest and most famous of the “macaronic” Christmas songs—carols that combine two or more languages. The original melody is likely a variant of a medieval Gregorian chant. The text was written in 1328 by Henrich Suso, a priest who claimed to have a vision in which angels danced in celebration of Christ’s birth while singing these words in Latin and Old German.
By the middle of the 16th century it was a favorite carol in both Catholic and Protestant churches in Germany. At the mention of ringing bells in the lyrics, the Choir, Orchestra, and Gabriel Trumpet Ensemble are joined by the Bells at Temple Square.
