Student Employment

WCMU provides student employment to students currently attending Central Michigan University. These positions range throughout departments, and give students the skills they need for future careers. All open positions can be viewed on the CMU student employment page, on the Central Michigan University Website.
Most positions are posted near the start of each semester.
 

FALL 2021 WCMU STUDENT POSITIONS AVAILABLE

 

General Assignment Reporter

Duties Include: Find and pitch radio story ideas; Conduct Interviews; Write broadcast and web news; Voice and produce stories. Skills Desired: Candidates must have good writing skills and be coachable. 

Schedule: Flexible with classes. Hours are available M - F, 9a - 5p. Must work a minimum of two days for a minimum total of 8 hrs.

Public Relations Assistant

Duties Include: Assist the WCMU Public Media marketing team with writing and distributing press releases, updating media lists, and establishing press connections across our 45-county coverage area. The NPR and PBS affiliates broadcast on eight radio and four television transmitters serving viewers and listeners in central and northern Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula and portions of Ontario, Canada.
Skills Desired: Strong writing and organizational skills. Preference given to IPR, JRN, and MKT majors or similar with experience in writing press releases.
Schedule: Flexible with classes during on-campus office hours, Mon - Fri, 8a - 5p; 10 hrs/wk. Position has the potential to extend into Summer 2022.

Student Receptionist

Duties Include: Answer phones, greet and assist WCMU Public Media and Welcome Center guests, distribute mail, run errands, assist with bulk mailings, create and maintain Excel spreadsheets and Word documents, and other duties as needed.

Skills Desired: Previous office experience is preferred. Familiarity with multi-line phone, copier, printer and fax machine; demonstrated organizational skills with strong attention to detail; ability to multi-task; ability to work independently with minimal supervision; and proficient in Word and Excel. Must present a professional image. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Schedule: 10-20 hrs/wk during office hours, Mon-Fri, 7:45a - 5:15p; schedule to be determined based on student availability and office need. Schedule may change each semester. Must be available during Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer. SUMMER: 20-40 hrs/wk.

TV Production Crew

Duties Include: Assist WCMU staff with live and live-to-tape television productions.

Skills Desired: Experience with studio productions; including cameras, audio, and floor directing. Crew members should also possess strong communication skills, attention to detail, and be dependable.

Schedule: Thursday nights, 7p - 8:15p.
