Listen MKE is a production in partnership with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, WUWM 89.7 Milwaukee's NPR, Milwaukee Public Library and Milwaukee PBS.

A discussion on the unrest in Kenosha after the shooting of Jacob Blake. Among our guests: former Kenosha County supervisor Dayvin Hallmon, who long has emphasized the need to build trust between African Americans in Kenosha and the police, and Marc Levine, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, who has studied the impact of racism on southeastern Wisconsin and has a new study that found caste-like conditions for Blacks in Milwaukee.

"Milwaukee in Pain" is a documentary currently available on Amazon Prime by filmmaker Theo Rogers, a native Milwaukeean. It documents the horrific impact Covid-19 has had on a community already besieged by systematic racism.

Black Nouveau is an award-winning program that tells stories of triumph and transformation in Milwaukee's African-American community through profiles and interviews of the city's change makers. The program airs monthly and is hosted by veteran reporter and Milwaukee native Joanne Williams.

Black Nouveau was recently honored in 2018 with a Chicago Midwest Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Affairs/Current Affairs Program for the "Crossing the Bridge Special." The show has also been recognized over a dozen times with "Salute to Excellence" awards by the National Association of Black Journalists.

Meet the show host - Earl Arms

Earl Arms, is a well-known leader in Milwaukee and a familiar face to television.

Arms served as Sports Anchor/Reporter at WDJT-TV Channel 58 from 2013 to 2017, and then moved to Jackson, MS to join WAPT as an Anchor/Reporter. In 2019, Arms returned home to become Communications Director for Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes, and in 2020, became the Media Relations Manager for Milwaukee Public Schools.

As one of the nation’s longest-running series on public television, Black Nouveau is a program by, for, and about the African-American experience in Milwaukee and beyond. It serves Milwaukee PBS’ commitment to producing and broadcasting quality programming with topics of importance to the diverse viewership it serves.
