Growing Support For The Friends Of Idaho Public Television Endowment

Since 2007, the Friends of Idaho Public Television Endowment has distributed more than $2.7 million of unrestricted investment proceeds to support the mission of IdahoPTV. These funds enable our production team to tackle special projects, to produce important program that otherwise would remain untold, and to showcase the extraordinary people and places that make Idaho special.

Contributions to the Friends of Idaho Public Television Endowment strengthen the base of support for a truly statewide communication network many Idahoans count on for quality news, education, and entertainment programs. Individual gifts and corporate donations to the Endowment Fund might also qualify for the expanded Idaho State Education Tax Credit. These include:

  • A one-time gift
  • Pledges for 3-5 years
  • Challenge or matching gifts
  • Designation gifts of stock and securities

Appreciated Stocks and Securities

Gifts of publicly traded securities, including stocks, mutual funds, municipal and corporate bonds, treasury bills and notes, warrants, stock options and stock appreciation rights can be a mutually beneficial way to combine your charitable giving goals with effective estate and financial planning.

Completing a gift of securities is most often done through an electronic transfer directly from your broker to Idaho Public Television´s account. You will need to provide your broker with important information found on this Notification of Electronic Stock Transfer form (PDF).

Advantages

Individual taxpayers have long enjoyed the opportunity to make contributions of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other securities that have increased in value while bypassing capital gains tax that would be due if sold. When you make a donation to Idaho Public Television appreciated securities you might receive an immediate tax deduction and savings on capital gains.

When securities have decreased in value, it may be advantageous to sell the securities and then make a cash contribution. You may then be able to claim tax benefits for the capitol loss as well as the value of the contribution.

Individuals, corporations and foundations can invest in IdahoPTV’s mission with philanthropic gifts; grants; program underwriting; and production sponsorship.

Education Outreach Initiatives – With lifelong learning at the core of our mission, education outreach initiatives are a natural extension to our trusted television programming. Our work is deliberately focused on strengthening a child's learning ecosystem by supporting families, educators and communities through Parent Engagement; STEM and Literacy activities; the Teacher Community Program; and the American Graduate workforce development project. Substantial philanthropic support is needed to continue – and to grow - all of these programs that positively impact and strengthen Idaho families and communities.

Private contributions are critically needed to support award-winning local productions:

IDAHO EXPERIENCE is a new series produced by the award-winning team at Idaho Public Television that uncovers untold stories, bringing new information to light, and connecting Idaho’s past in a contemporary way. Significant funding support is needed to help underwrite the production costs and Idaho history curriculum development.

OUTDOOR IDAHO celebrates the diversity and richness of our state and its people by exploring the beauty, drama, and science of nature, while taking a close look at resource and environmental issues facing the West.

DIALOGUE introduces viewers to a wide range of eclectic and inspiring people, covering diverse topics.

IDAHO REPORTS is the longest-running public affairs program in the West dedicated to covering Idaho statehouse politics.

IDAHO IN SESSION increases government transparency and allows citizens an open door to the government process by airing Idaho House and Senate sessions, committee meetings, court hearings and more through an open access website.

SCIENCE TREK piques grade-schoolers' curiosity in science and inspires them to investigate science, technology, engineering and math careers. Each month during the school year, the Science Trek team explores a scientific subject with new 60-second video shorts also available on the website, Facebook, YouTube, and on PBS Learning Media.

If you are at least 70½ you can make tax-free gifts directly from your IRA to the Friends Idaho Public Television as a Qualified Charitable Distribution.

Gifts made directly from your IRA to Idaho Public Television count toward your Required Minimum Distribution if you are required to take one (that is, if you reached age 70 ½ before January 1, 2020 or are 72 or older).

That way, your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) won't be taxable income, but WILL make a difference. It's a smart way to not only enjoy tax savings but also support the value of public television.

    Here's How It Works:
  • You must be 70½ or older at the time of the gift to make an IRA rollover gift to a public charity, like IdahoPTV.
  • You can give up to $100,000 from your Traditional or Roth IRA.
  • Instruct your plan administrator to send a specific dollar amount directly to Idaho Public Television.
  • All the information you need to initiate a charitable rollover directly from your IRA to Idaho Public Television can be found in this sample letter to your IRA custodian.
  • Notify us of your intent to give by sending a copy of your completed request to shane.chariton@idahoptv.org or mail to: Idaho Public Television at 1455 North Orchard Street, Boise, ID 83706.
  • Your gift must be received by December 31 for the gift to qualify for this tax year.

    Benefits to You:
  • Each dollar of your donation will count towards your required minimum distribution for the year.
  • You can exclude up to $100,000 of this gift from your Federal gross income - resulting in lower taxable income and possible tax savings.
  • You will have the personal satisfaction of doing more for our community.
  • Tip: This tax savings is especially valuable to donors who are non-itemizers and donors who have reached their limit on itemized charitable deductions.
  • Please consult with your financial advisor about your particular tax situation.

Idaho Public Television is not a tax advisor. To maximize the benefit of your specific gift, please contact a professional tax or financial advisor.

To make a direct gift to The Friends of Idaho Public Television, Inc. from your retirement account, contact your IRA administrator.
